Hey there guys - just saw this post at Stromtrooper and ADVrider and thought i'd share it. Seems like quality stuff. I emailed him about the cost of shipping up here. Waiting for a response. I told him he could probably sell 10 of them just to us Smiley

http://www.stromtrooper.com/showthread.php?t=48308&page=5
$120 for the plate, $30 for the heavy duty bracket. (you'd have to order a hardware kit from Twisted Throttle for a Motech skid)

His brackets on the left. Motech one on the right.

No pic of bottom. Does his solve the bolt hanging down problem?

Found one, I see it doesn't.

Is there a reason why you couldn't use carriage bolts (domed-top)?

in this instance the bolts are threading into that support bracket which has nuts welded to the plate. Carriage bolts would require a loose nut. We have several around here.  Evil  I'll have to ask him what he could do about that. I see he brazed some relief sections in front of the bolts. That might take the pressure off the bolt head itself.

I agree that section almost needs to be completely flat. So you would have to lower the whole skid plat an inch and then have recessed bolts. I wish I knew how to work with metal.

Well Smurph get a raw metal one and bring it over.  I have a little experience with metal & access to all the tools including welder, torch and machining tools.  I am sure we could re work it a bit.  TECH NIIGHT!!!!!

Nice clown avatar Dan. Did I tell you that I suffer from Coulrophobia.

Perhaps we should just take some steel and make a plate to fit Smiley.

Sounds good to me, I built one for my quad some time ago with some heavier material.  It stood up well.  I have access to the stuff needed.

so to ship to our fine city...
$120 for the plate
$35 for the bracket
$45 for shipping UPS.

I hate UPS due to the brokerage fees but not sure if it would apply in this case. I believe if you go UPS Air, then there is no extra $$. Doubt this would go air though.

Hmmm.... decisions.

I've ordered the skid plate and the rear mounting bracket.  Shipping cost (USPost) was $50 (to Victoria, BC).  It was shipped out today, so I won't see it until end of next week at the earliest.  Going on my K7 650A.  Will post some pictures and answer any questions after it gets here.  Certainly looks like a quality product.

Cheers,
Craig.

Great to hear Craigster. It certainly appears to be a quality product. I look forward to reading your impression of it when it arrives. Also good that you got it shipped USPS. Made in USA so you shouldn't have any other fees on top.

Yeah, sorry about that.  The plate is very high quality, professional welds & cutouts.  Powdercoat is nicely done.  The bracket is seriously heavy duty.  I'd guess the total added weight of bracket and plate to be about 6-8 kilos.  I haven't mounted it to the bike yet.  Seems finding a 1 1/4 inch U bolt in 3/8 stock isn't as easy as I'd thought.  Most auto supply houses have 1 3/8, but not 1 1/4.  As soon as I find one, I'll get on with the install and the photos.  Someone recommended a marine supply store, or an off-road specialty shop.  Will make some calls tomorrow.

Based on appearance and apparent quality, I've got no regrets and would buy this again in a heartbeat.  If I find the right U-bolts, I may install tomorrow.

Cheers...I'll get back to you.

Craig.

Seems finding a 1 1/4 inch U bolt in 3/8 stock isn't as easy as I'd thought.  Most auto supply houses have 1 3/8, but not 1 1/4.
Craig.

It seems to me, that they should be supplying ALL the mounting hardware which should include what you need to mount to your crash bars and other popular brands of bars out there?

Maybe --

the "THEY" is one guy who makes these in his spare time...not a real assembly line kinda place.  I also recall that the original post over on ST.com said "why pay me for hardware and shipping when you can source your own bolts for less?" - this remains true.  I'd likely have a different opinion if this product was being mass produced.  Honestly, I can't complain about anything associated with service, quality, price, etc.

Perhaps this has no validity but if he doesn't supply the hardware, then he can't really be held liable for anything that happens to you or your bike while on the road. I know i'm overthinking it - but it might be part of the reason; who knows Smiley

I see the guy making the plates revised his post and is now offering a hardware kit. you can choose from Hex head bolts or Domed hex KEY bolts. The hardware package is $10. I think i'll be ordering up the whole package as it's the sturdiest i've found out there. I'm not worried about the bolt heads sticking down.
