I know I read this in this thread somewhere??? Any how, I just got around to changing my air filter last week.  It was changed at about 22,000 miles by the previous owner.  He had an OEM filter in it which by the way was chuck full of dead honey bees? (guess we solved where the honey bees are going).

So, now at 28,000 I decide to change out the filter to a K&N that I already had (ebay purchase).

So, I found the gasket on the OEM filter, the air box was in stellar condition.  I went to install the K&N and the gasket would not mould over the edges.  So upon close inspection I found the edge of the K&N is exactly the width of the OEM with the gasket on it. So the gasket wouldn't go on the K&N.

The width being the same, I installed the K&N without the gasket as it appeared to provide the necessary seal.  It isn't sucking air and isn't necessarily noisy.

Did I screw up?  I am going to adjust the secondaries anyway so tearing it down is not a problem.

You're okay. The K&N is supposed to install the way you did it. If you are concerned about the seal, silicone grease is often used to assure it.

Another member warned me of the removable air filter seal. I can see how this seal could be tossed out with the old air filter.  doh!

We saw a Vee at the Rapid City rally without a gasket.  A filter I received today did come with a new gasket but it is still something to be aware of.

Does the K&N filter need a gasket or is it molded as part of the filter?

It's part of the filter base.

So to make it very clear, "the stock air cleaner gasket is not needed when installing a K&N air filter?"

That is correct.
