Yes I checked mine and YES, the little f***er was missing.
Once more, thank you, Peter, and all the others who share their experiences and practical knowledge with the rest.

Pulled the tank today to replace the air filter and the gasket was properly in place.  However, you can see where a fine dust where dirt is getting past the filter. The gasket design does not provide a good enough seal and lets the dust by.  Also, there were a lot
#####  of bugs and junk in the filter and the bike only has 6k on it.  I really wasn't surprised to find the filter full of bugs/dirt after seeing and hearing about other's experiences with the filter, but I was amazed that the filter gasket did such a poor job of keeping the dirt out of the box.

I guess rim grease is always an option but the best solution would be a semi-soft gasket that the air filter cover would sink into and provide a good seal.  This would be similar to the PC1 Pro-Seal that I have mentioned on here before.  I use one of my dirt bike and it works great!

I mentioned that I had a Used Oil Analysis done on my DL650 and that it showed high levels of Silicone, indicating either a dirty or poor sealing air filter.  I think I now have my answer.  Embarrassed

I must have thrown my gasket out with the old air filter some 500 km ago. makes me sick. read this thread this morning and tore the bike apart in record time only to be shocked that there was no gasket. When I changed the filter there was a small amount of dirt in the air box(500 Km ago). Makes me wonder if there was ever a gasket there. Hope like heck the motor is okay. Thanks for the info.

Okay, I looked. It's the first time I took the tank off. Everything is good. The gasket was in place of course. There was very little detritus on the filter. There was no oil in the airbox. The spun plastic element was over the top a touch and intruding on the gasket mating surface so I pushed it down a bit before reassembly. After reading all the posts about difficulty removing the tank and getting the connections apart, it was a relief to discover how easy it actually is to do.

Ya know I voted yes but now come to think of it there is no damn gasket on mine!!
I looked on the microfiche and I have had the airbox opened about 4 times since I bought the bike 10k miles ago. I just put in a new filter the other day while I had the tank off to clean the fuel filter and I distinctly recall never seeing a gasket! Needless to say I am a bit annoyed by this. I really hope there is no permanent damage to my motor Embarrassed
BTW the previous owner had the bike serviced exclusively by the dealer. Figures.

It shouldn't be an issue for new bikes but it seems the techs just throw the old filter away and then install the new one, sans gasket.  This starts the cycle that will never end until someone says "hey, isn't there supposed to be a gasket on this air filter?"  Huh?

I must be an idiot on a number of counts.  First, I am not sure what filter issue I am voting on.  I assume that it refers to a gasket on the air filter that folks neglect to reinstall when changing it.  At 3200 miles I do not think my air filter has ever been removed, unless the dealer did at the 600 mile service.  Second, I accidentally voted "Yes, I did" when I should have selected "No, but I will".

I plan to do the 4,000 mile service myself at which time I will be sure to reuse the gasket.  Thanks for the heads up.  (Note:  I think my dealer is competent, I just want to understand the bike myself).

I mostly lurk on this forum, but let me say it is best source of V-Strom info out there.  Much Thanks.

I had the same problem .... the page runs over to the far right where you will find a drop down menu of responses that select from before clicking "Vote"
