That is what my filter looked like when I bought my bike and open up the air box for the first time. The bike had 16,000 miles on it.... the guy who owned it before me swore to me had the bike serviced before he put it up for sale...... And knowing how bike shops are in this town, I'm sure he paid for a new air filter.....

The rough stuff in there does not really restrict air flow that much. My filter never has that much bugs, but it is dark-grey or black after half the mileage. It is the fine dust that cloggs things. Ok back to the gasket. They should make the gasket like this

I checked mine as it was in for service at Chris Gunster's yesterday and it was seated as it should be. Also I checked the throttle bodys and they're OK as well.

Checked mine again when I removed the secondries? I'm wondering how it could be put in wrong? It locates on 4 dowls, can't move when you put the lid on?

I did it myself at 4000 km and made sure the gasket was on right, after reading up on it here. But I had Suzuki do the 12,000km service since I was hoping to get a TBS done (didn't happen, another story). I trust the mechanic, but noticed his young assitant blasting the filter out back with the compressor, and now I'm nervous that the youngster was in charge of putting it back in and may have forgotten or misaligned the gasket. I've only done about 1000 km since then, but I'm going to check it out this weekend for peace of mind. I need to wire up some heated grips anyway. What a pain to not be able to trust the "professionals" with something so simple. I've had some scary oil filter experiences with car lube places before, so the more you do yourself the better off you'll be.

Oi, I haven't looked at mine yet although the bike only has 6000 km on the clock and I did the 6000 Km service myself. Got a brand new filter in the cupboard but didn't think I'd change it for a while as I've never been offroad. Now I'm worried! I assumed that since the filter has never been replaced the seal should be OK. Has anyone come across the 'missing gasket' problem NOT as a result of sloppy dealer work but rather it wasn't installed from the factory!?

Never heard about that. It was always after the dealer service.

Just replaced my air cleaner which in Sydney is provided with a gasket, which I didn't order. So now I have a spare (used) gasket. It seemed easy enough to install without stuffing up the gasket but it was nice to know I needed to be sure that I didn't stuff it up.

Suzuki reads all relevant forums (and in particular this one). I really would not wonder if they changed and supplied the gaskets now. Lets wait and see over the next few feedbacks.

My dumb ass didn't read the 'removing secondaries' thread properly, and I took the air cleaner apart during 'Project Blackout' while the tank was off before I was told that it does no good on the 650. At 6,000 miles, it was clean (I don't ride on dirt) except for a couple of bees and a fly that had been ingested by the intake snorkle. Once my stupidity had been pointed out to me, I put the filter back in, and attempted to put the cover back on. THAT was a treat! This does NOT like to go back together properly, and took me about 20 minutes to get it right. I voted that it was fine, but just realized there was NO gasket other than the one that surrounded the air cleaner itself, is this the problem in question?
I'm sure it this has been posted, but be careful putting this back together or you will have air coming in through the gap between the bottom and top of the air cleaner box instead of just the snorkle.

You learn how to do it after the second time.
This part needs some rethinking from the engineering side.

Well I've just taken the Suzuki air filter out of my 02 1000 Vstrom and guess what? There was no gasket. So much for paying to have it serviced. I have now decided to get my hands dirty and do it myself. I should have ordered a gasket when I ordered the replacement filter but I was hoping that there would be a gasket in there.
I bought the bike used at 10,000 miles, and its now done around 34,000 miles, God only knows how long its been running without a gasket. Still come next week when the gasket arrives it will be right.

Did you get any pics of the inside of the airbox Chris? If not, how clean was it in there? Inquisitive minds need to know

No Mr Preload I didn't take any photos but there is hardly any dust in there at all. In fact there is more dust on my TV screen and furniture. I've just had my finger in the air box and I could hardly write my name in the dust there is so little.
I took the filter out in May and blew it clean with an air line and I watched a mechanic do the same the previous year. He did not wipe the box out nor did I.
I will fit the gasket when it arrives as if there is one specified I suppose it's for a reason but I can't see that it has been too detrimental not having one fitted.

You must ride in a clean world or the gasket is there and you don't realize it.

It is quite dust free over here John. Unles you happen to go off road, then due to the damp climate dust usually still isn't a problem. Of course having a ride around Gravesy's living room might give you reason for concern without a gasket.

I'm getting more exercise than I've had for a while, I keep having to go out to the garage and look at my airbox . After checking again there is definitely no gasket. The filter did have a lot dead French insects in it. I recognise them as the same ones that were all over my visor when I was on holiday. They are just not as squashed.
Preload is correct, we do not have much of a problem with dust on the roads in the UK. Standing water, speed cameras and ridiculously low speed limits yes but dust no.

Picked up my gasket on 11 October and here we are on the 19 October and it's still not fitted. Question: Does the gasket go under the air filter between the air filter and the air box or does it go on top of the air filter between the air filter and the cover. I looked on Alpha Suzuki's web site and their diagram shows it going underneath the air filter between the air filter and the air box Clicky and this is the way I've tried to fit it. My problem is that the stiff rubber air intake at the front fouls on the frame and then the gasket goes out of position. Maybe I just need more practice or an extra set of hands.
