Riders,
Have seen in other threads from awhile back where people were wanting to establish a "standard" frs/gmrs radio channel for riders to use should we pass each other out on the highway.  They had wanted it to be Channel 7 with a privacy code of 14  "7-14".  Its a lower wattage but would cover both frequencies if I understood it correctly.  My Autocom is all set to go so it would be nice if there were a standard should any of us pass by on our way to Montrose.  Any ideas? Thoughts?  --BD

Motel Reservations
If you planning to stay at the Holiday Inn Express and have not made reservations PLEASE get them done ASAP.  This motel will likely fill as they usually are the HQ motel for just about every event in Montrose.  Our cut off is supposed to be 6/1.

Thanks,

Just 3 weeks till the big event. Here is a list of vendors and prizes (that we have so far). We will use the same format that we used in Rapid City to distribute prizes.

Farklemania is coming watch for it!
VStrom 2010 Gathering

Vendor/Supplier List of Door Prizes

We are extremely fortunate to have such a great bunch friends that care that our Gathering is a success and have donated to that end for us. Davis Service Center and Twisted Throttle are the sponsors this year. We are lucky to have the following attending the Rally this year:
1. Adventure Tech, Rick & Gloria Hughes – they’re furnishing fork braces, mirror extenders and discount coupons. Watch for Rick to introduce a new product here.
2. Davis Service Center, our Friday sponsor, Billy Aller – he’s the VStrom super sales guy. This guy rides his Wee where none have been before, 1st Strom rider to ride in the Big Dog invitational race. If you want to know something about off pavement or off road riding ask Wide Load Aller. Open house Saturday morning at DSC with coffee & donuts and if you need service, tires, oil change, etc. they have geared up to help you. They have a coupon deal working and some nice prizes.
3. Happy Trails Motorcycle Products, Ed Hiatt says they’re furnishing 2 sets of panniers plus some 1st class tire repairs kits. Captain Ed says we might even have a silent auction to benefit the forums, hum!
4. Pat Walsh Designs, Gary Hansen, he says watch for new products to be introduced. Gary will have some nice prizes for us.
5. Twisted Throttle, our Saturday sponsor, Erik Stephens is bringing some nice surprises and wouldn’t divulge what he’s bringing. Erik will be talking about new lights and product redesigns. He’s planning a seminar at the Gathering.
6. WindStrom, Eric Vonwiller is bringing 3 test windshields to put on your Strom and test. They are giving away a windshield and will be selling the demos, watch for a deal here.
Our friends that cannot attend have furnished some nice prizes too:
1. Adaptive Technologies, they have sent $550.00 in gift certificates.
2. Cee Baileys, a 75% off a windshield coupon, headlight armor and various cleaning products.
3. Corbin, a $300.00 gift certificate.
4. Cruiserworks, 2 pair of boots plus 20% discount to all rally attendees.
5. Dan Vesel VStrom Accessories, new and old style luggage guards.
6. Giant Loop, T-Shirts and a bag.
7. HealTech Electronics, Speedo Healer or GI Pro.
8. Held USA, 2 30% discount certificates, T-Shirts.
9. Hyper-Lite LED Products, running light/flashing brake light kit.
10. Kleen Chain, synthetic chain lube sample product.
11. MadStad Engineering, 2 MadStad windshield brackets.
12. Manic Salamander, zip on power outlet kit.
13. MotoGear Outlet, 2 gift certificates plus discount coupons.
14. National Cycle, V Stream windshield.
15. Roadgear, digital tire gauge and 10% off coupons.
16. Sargent Cycle Product, 50% off product or custom services plus 10% discount and free shipping coupons.
17. Superbrace, mail in coupon for Superbrace.
18. Wolfman Motorcycle Luggage, tank bag, tool roll and misc.

Pulled the trigger and made the reservations.  The Gathering dovetailed nicely with the MSTA STAR rally in Taos which ends on Wed.  I'll drop the wife off in Durango on Thurs so she can fly home and I'll proceed on to Montrose.  Gotta leave on Sat and head home for work on Mon.   See y'all there.

My roommate bailed on me and I have an opening at a cabin at Montrose RV Resort.  If any last minute guys need a place to sleep, let me know.

Also, I am riding in from KC starting Wed morning, camping that night at John Martin State Park.  Going out Hwy 50 across KS and CO.  Anybody else in the vicinity?  BamaTexRider - don't know if that fits what you are doing.

Just wanted to say if anyone coming from the east gets "nearly there" and needs help, I'm about 6 mi off US 285 about an hour west of Denver and can offer assistance if you want to call sev'n too oh, too fiv tree, too tree nin for.

Sadly I won't be able to make it but can heartily recommend a few things.
1- As a route to get there I highly recommend US285-US50 combo through "South Park", over Monarch pass ( or better yet branch north @ buena vista & use Cottonwood Pass - nice graded dirt on west side - and catch 50 again in Gunnison), past Blue Mesa reservoir and Black Canyon of the Gunnison.  Beats the hell out of interstate and just as fast, time wise.  Or if you must do Glenwood canyon on I70 (nice if you haven't done it, but not sure it's worth the drive south on the western slope IMHO), then maybe use the above in the opposite direction.
2- If you're inclined to dry camp or use FS campground, turn south off US50  about 20 min east of Montrose into the valley of the Cimarron river and about an hour off pavement you'll find nice FS campgrounds near Silverjack Reservoir.  Or beautiful dry camps along the river south of the reservoir.
3- For a great dirt/pavement loop head  south out of Montrose and when you get to Ridgeway head east over Owl Creek Pass (dirt) to Silverjack reservoir then North out the Cimarron valley (still dirt) and west again on 50 back to Montrose.  Just a couple hours round trip, 60% dirt.  For a longer ride head west out of Ridgeway, then south on Last Dollar Road (dirt) over to Teluride then loop back on pavement (this one may be 3 hrs, but only 30% dirt).  If you like the real back country stuff, make your way clear over to Nucla (west of Ridgeway) to the west and find your way back into Motrose from there on the dirt roads that canvas the area north of CO145 (this one a nice long "exploring" type trip,1/2-full day as you like, not as much jaw dropping scenery, but a "different" sort of Colorado experience).

Of course the pass roads of the San Juans are legendary and most very doable with the right tires and conditions but those may not be for everyone who's arrived on street tires after chewing up cross country mileage to get there.  But all of the above are nice dirt-road stuff with no super high altitude.

Have fun, and feel free to call if I can help.

I was on my way in to work this morning when I shared a wave with a nice couple 2-up on a 'Strom headed south on US285 near Windy Point about 7:30am.  I thought,  "they must be headed for the rally"  I hope I was right!  If it's anyone who happens to read this, I was the one in the red/silver Aerostich jacket that looks more sort of pink and gray now that it's in the latter half of it's second decade of use.   Smiley

Have fun!
