Thanks John!

The big one is showing and covering some of the best roads to the SE of Ironhorse and back tracks over itself in a couple of places.

One of the questions is road conditions on Wayah Rd., it has been challenging because of wash areas that cover the road with gravel, dirt and big rocks.

They are have a bicycle race on Saturday that is leaving from Nantahala Outdoor Center at 9:00 am and heading toward the Gap. The Z car group, Two Stroke group and the V-Strom group will be sharing the roads with all the others!

I checked with Tammi at Ironhorse and she has 20 of the current Mad Maps that show some of the roads that are shown above. The cost is about 9.00, better price than what I paid for mine at the International Motorcycle Show. Great map and if you don't have one for this area I would suggest getting one when you arrive.

Everyone,

OK ... just thought I would let everyone know that everything is all planned for an Alaska Night at V-Strom East on Friday night May 18 beginning at 9PM. The idea is to have some people who have been to Alaska recently to talk about their experiences. Hope we didn't leave anyone out. Perhaps next year someone wil take the lead to organize some presentations on another theme.

The good folks at the Ironhorse have reserved the main lodge area for us from 9-10:30 and agreed to let us use their projector. Here's the schedule:

9-9:15  Bill Clelland and Mark Choquett will start us off.
9:15-9:30  Roy Bertalotto and Bob Hadden
9:30-9:45  Lew Waterman
9:45-10 Jeff Timblin will present for Joe Busby and Dick Peterson.
10-10:15  Q&A (Everyone)

Looking forward to it. Hope you all have a safe trip ... see you there!

Garry's Routes:
The big one - 353 miles
Smaller but similar - 271 miles
The Gap, Ducktown & Cherohala - 217 miles

For those of you with GPS units:
I have a .gpx file available for download that contains five different Loops. GPX format files are compatible with almost all GPS manufacturers mapping software.

These are new loops - they are not duplicates of a route I posted a link to earlier.
A few are almost identical to Garry's loops pictured by John.

The link is a directory to "GOTS 07" on one of my ftp servers.
The "GOTS 07 Loops.gpx" is almost 2mb - but is does have the 5 loops. After downloading, make sure you have ".gpx" selected as file type when you attempt to open it.

If your browser allows, right click and save linked file as source. Or open link and then save as source. Make sure the file extension stays .gpx. (Macs have a habit of putting .txt on the file)

For anyone heading south through Virginia the "Plateau to Ironhorse.gpx" file has an interesting route to Stecoah.

Dave, are these files supposed to be down-loadable? All I get is a view where it would have to be cut & paste.

Nevermind. I see, save as, open with mapsource as gpx type & recal each route. Works good & look like some nice routes.

OK we have posted the maps for the street loops now we have the dual sport loops.

We have a couple of the guys that have expressed interest in leading a group on a route taken at one of the previous Gatherings and they have routes, this one is off the Tail or the Dragon web site, under Maps. I know nothing about the routes and in fear of being called a BIG PUSSIE I will keep my dirt opinions to those that want to follow me on Strom on the street and then in the dirt on my KTM  Grin  Tongue

Just pulled into my garage after my long haul up I-75 to Michigan.  So much for making tracks home a little earlier this time - I hung out and visited with Lew and Punky for a while, then stopped in at the Gap and cadged a test ride on a KTM supermotard, and then had a leisurely lunch in Maryville.  It was probably 4pm before I got on I-75.

It was an awesome get together and I am looking forward to the next one.  Smiley

So how many sport bikes did you pass during that test ride?  Grin

It was great to meet you Katherine.

The 07 gathering was indeed a blast. Picture perfect weather sure was a pleasant change from our past few years of rain and fog.

Seth and I took a curvaceous route home to Virginia. Only 350 miles but it was like riding the Gap WFO for 7.5 hours. Not a bad way to spend a Sunday.

Thanks Everyone!

A great first Alaska Night event that I hope will become a tradition at future V-Strom gatherings. We had many positive comments! Thanks to the Ironhorse for hosting us and providing the excellent facilities! Thanks to John and Garry for planning another great V-Strom Gathering!

Thanks to Bill Clelland and Mark Choquett for getting us started. It was great to hear from the first V-Stromers to reach the northern most towns in Alaska and Canada! Special thanks to Bill's wife for joining us.

Roy Bertalotto and Bob Hadden did an great job on the road conditions and special presentations on photography, etc. Everyone was interested in hearing about road conditions and the "photography" captured everyone's attention!

It was particularly special to hear from Lew Waterman and his travels with Punky. Wow, Prudhoe Bay to the southern most tip of South America--many thanks for your insights!

Jeff Timblin did a great job presenting the photos of the trip with Joe Busby and Dick Peterson. Jeff rode two-up to Prudhoe Bay with his girlfriend Olivia ... then turned around and rode to Key West!

Hope everyone had a safe trip home ... looking forward to seeing everyone next year!

It looks like a great time! If there is any way I can fit it in I will be there next year. It looks like you guys had better views than I did on the 'asphalt beach' teaching an MSF basic rider course!

East Coast Gathering V. There where some questions about the numbering. It's actually the 7th gathering, the first being October 02. The first 2 years we had 2 per year, spring & fall. Since then we have only had the spring gathering, so I dropped the 2 fall ones and it became V to represent the 5 spring gatherings starting in April 03.

Official results, as far as folks that signed my sheet. I suspect some didn't as my count put the attendees at a higher number.

62 V-Stroms at Ironhorse. One V-Strom owner present but rode a Yamaha.  Sad  Plus 10 wifes & girlfriends. I think the wifes & girlfriend number was higher also.

Farthest traveled: Close between Mark from Iowa & Gerhard from Ontario and Sylvain from Quebec. All a tad over 1000 miles.

Attendance by home:
Ontario 3
Quebec 1
Alabama 5
Connecticut 1
DC 1
Florida 3
Georgia 7
Illinois 2
Iowa 1
Kentucky 1
Maryland 2
Massachusetts 3
Maine 1
Michigan 1
North Carolina 13
Pennsylvania 1
Rhode Island 1
South Carolina 8
Tennessee 9
Virginia 7
West Virginia 1
Wisconsin 2

Fairly even split between wees & vees.

Weather, fantastic. Lows a little low at 32-37F. Highs in the lower 70s. Friday a bit cloudy & windy. The best weather we have had in awhile.

I always forget one item when traveling. This time it was my camera. So the rest of you step up and post some pics please!

Most roads where in excellent condition & traffic was on the light side, except at the gap. Bunch of new tar snakes in Georgia & some gravel in corners as well.

Bunch of interesting things going on around the area. Most noted by me was the 40 something Ferrari group, which included an F50, doing the gap on Friday. Lots of old road type 2-strokes running around the area.

Two off road events, that I heard of, with no major personnel injuries, which is very good, & probably one bike total. I'll leave it at that and the two involved can tell their stories if they desire.

Every year this event just seems to get better & better. This year there were no scheduled rides & I didn't hear anybody complaining as all just seemed to get together in small groups and RIDE!

Ironhorse just gets better & better. Food great as always. More rooms will be available next year as well, for those that do not wish to camp.

Camp grounds where actually starting to get full. Could maybe squeeze in about a dozen more.

You yellow guys need to get it together, only 2 present!  Cry

Dates for next year are 15-18 May, 2008.

---------------------------------

Personel notes.

SV-Strom ran perfect. Suspension is very close for solo & two-up. For two-up I just had to crank the Wilbers about half way up on the pre-load. The front was a bit rough to start with but after 600 miles of twisties & bumps it dialed right in. I removed the PCIII prior to the trip & tuned the stock setup with the Yosh over the weekend. I have it pretty close, 37.3 MPG for the weekend and 2nd gear power wheelies going up the long hills.  Grin  I really like the new Battlewings. Havn't had them in the wet, but everything they did in the dry was spot on. I love the slipper clutch, this should be standard in the Stroms.

Thanks to Garry, who did most of the work. Dick for putting the Alaska night presentation together, which was very good. Those who put on the presentation. Eric from Twisted Throttle for suppling some door prises & being present for the 2nd year. Ironhorse personnel for being great hosts. Our good buddy Sylvain from the great white North for bring that great Maple Syrup again this year. And all attendees for making it a very enjoyable event.

See y'all next year.

Kudos to John Weldon, Garry (2 R's), Mark, Bill, Roy etc for all their efforts.  To the Strommer/s who saw, asked or were annoyed by the flashing brake light/turn signal system on the rear of my '03 Silver 1000 it's called "Sound Off Safety, Priority Plus". I believe it's only available through a dealer. Tucker Rocky distributes it.

I made it back in one piece.  I normally stop by in the morning to say farewell to everyone but I got a call from the vet telling me my dog was not doing well at the kennel (he's almost 16) so I jetted straight for the homestead to get the puppy.   He's doing better but his heart is messed up and won't be long for this world.

Pics definitely to follow.  Hopefully by tomorrow night.

Thanks to John for some great riding.  Thanks to Garry for getting this together this year.  Thanks to Erik from Twisted Throttle.  He taught me about cool V-Strom accessories and he learned to clean and oil his chain.  Not from me, obviously.

Definitely the best weather we've ever had for this rally.

Looking forward to next year (and booking a room long before the month before.)

OH! Forgot to add: I'd like to thank whomever donated the Superbrace! I know it was mentioned, but I was too shocked after winning the thing to remember who it was! Anyhow, got it installed yesterday and it really makes a difference, even at slower speeds! Just wish I had put it on 20k miles ago..

If you don't have a fork brace, it is a worthwhile addition! THANK YOU!!

I wonder the age spread oldest and youngest present?  feelin bad i missed it...won't happen next year... Happy

Your right it isn't Punky. Don't know who's dog it was, there where a few around.

No Joe rode his Harley, but the GS is fixed. His brother got a DL though.

I'm sure the oldest was probably Mark, but a couple others where close. There were a couple early 20's there, but don't know for sure.
