Yes, its 2010 and we are still going strong....

I am making these shelves using my CNC equipment and will sell them for $45 (DL650)  and $45 (DL1000)  +$5.00 shipping within the US, $7 to Canada and Mexico, and $9 worldwide via first class United States Parcel Post.   Add $2 to any for priority mail.

They are made of 1/8" 6061 T6 aluminum.  The face (surface that is visible after mounting) has a brushed finish.  For an additional $5 I can powdercoat the shelf matte black  (matching the black hardware on the handlebars).

Mine (above) supports a powerlet, a grip heater switch, and a LED Battery Gauge with Remote Flush Panel Mount LED
the DL650 shelf mounts using the two existing cable guide bolts.  Some adjustment to the cable guides may be necessary depending on what you install.  There is no problem with cable clearance on either side.

I will include TWO ROUND HOLES (one on each side) and a round center holes if desired to fit your needs at NO Charge, or you ship it with no holes at all.  For square or rectanguler holes (e.g., Datel volt meter) add $5.00.

See below for DL1000 pic. The DL1000 shelf mounts on the right cable guide and upper left tripple clamp bolt.

This has come up a few times so I thought it might be worthwhile to add some clarification to help speed up the process.

Most people don't have drill bits beyond 1/2 of an inch in their tool drawer. I will be happy to ADD holes for your application. However, you will need to tell me the size holes you want in inches or mm.   Since I'm using a mill, by special request, with discussion, I can add square or rectangular holes (e.g., for the datel digital voltmeter )

A powerlet uses an 18 mm hole, the heated grip black rocker style switch with the Symtec grip heaters takes a 13/16", standard ciggar lighters (e.g., Casa 12 VDC panel mount, Marinco marine 12V sockets) take a 1.125" hole.

I will endevour to catalog them as best I can, but if you want anything other than the above please state the hole size in inches or mm to avoid a shipping delay.

Payment can be made via PayPal to rickhughes805@hotmail.com

01/24/2009, Yep....still here, still at it.

From 01/08/2008

Wow.  It was long time ago and many shelves back when I wrote the information above.  Thanks to everybody who bought one.

I thought I might add why I made the shelf in the first place.  There is of course plenty of room for switches, lights, and other gizmos on the black horizontal part of the V-Strom fairing.  However, I wasn't comfortable with the idea of reaching under the handlebars while riding to flip a grip heater switch or running power cables under the handlebars.  It just didn't seem safe to me as I turned my handlebars back and forth and made motorcycle noises in the garage.  It occured to me that the center of the handlebars didn't move very far when turning the handlebars and there was a clear unobstructed path to my tank bag from the center of the handlebars.  Also, it was much easier to reach between the handlebars than to reach under them.  After two years of use I am very happy with my little shelf.  I hope everybody else is as well.

Here are some pictures from the old thread showing various installs.

Powder coated black.  I like it!

Two Walmart Casco Truck bed liner outlets.  ~$16 each

Two commecial rocker switches.

Covered by owner in a carbon fiber (look or real?) cloth.

Here two other outlet mounts I made by request.

Dual Powerlet outlet bracket powder coat matte black $25.  This could be done in single outlet also.

Simple Powerlet single outlet bracket powdercoat black for the rear passenger area $12.50.

Here is another cigarette lighter (see bottom of page) .  This one is made by powerlet.

It also uses a 1.125" hole.

Do you still offer this shelf, and if so how much for a black powder coat?

As long as the thread is here I'm still making these shelves.

Price is still just as stated in the first post of this thread....

"I am making these shelves using my CNC equipment and will sell them for $35 (DL650) and $45 (DL1000) +$5.00 shipping within the US, $7 to Canada and Mexico, and $9 worldwide via first class United States Parcel Post. Add $2 to any for priority mail.

The standard face plate is 5.75 wide at the widest point (back) and two inches from the back to the front.  I also have a version that is 2.5 inches from the back at the handlebars to the front.

All the picturs in this thread except of Marauder's withthe digital meter are of 2" untis.  The shelf with the digital meter is a 2.5".

The "bridge" in the middle where my LED is located is 3/4" front to back at the most narrow poitn.  The "bridge" onm the 2.5" unit is 1.25".

I started making the shelves 6" at the back, but sooned learned teh extra 1/4" was going to waste.  Unless you plan to install an digital meter like Marauder's I suggest the 2" shelf.  PM me for specifics applicaitons.

Hi,

I am interested in a shelf JUST like the one with the volt meter and 2 different outlets pictured above.  I am thinking of using the meter shown at the link below.  Is this the same one and if not will the larger shelf take this ok?

If you can let me know I will be able to place my order for a nice black one.  Many thanks.

Yes, it's the same Datel meter.  I suggest you contact me via email for faster message exchanges.  The box to the left with the name has an E-mail icon.  Just click it and an email window will appear.

Rick I want to thank you ahead of time for listening to my V-Strom needs. You are a good person that cares about the rider as much as what you sell. My DL1000 will be a better traveller with the RichlandRick touch. Thanks.

Ok, I have a question. I purchased these two WalMart Casco outlets, but they are not round. How are they get attached. They come with slots to install on surface. I also purchased the illuminating power switches for those outlets. So can those outlets and these switches be installed? I mean can you make holes for those?
I can just buy a shelf and then work my way with drilled holes and little saw to make fit.

I'm going to wire the outlets these coming week since I'm departuring for a three day trip next week.

I will wire at least one switch and wire tie it to something. I need it for GPS and some emergencies with inflators and stuff.

O-okey, I'll check when get back home. I haven't unpacked them. Maybe I picked up the wrong ones.

EDIT: I don't know, I ran out of Walmarts around here, stopped by 4 of them - all have the ones with the bracket. JCWitney sell those round ones for almost $20 plus shipping and handling. I'll try Boaters World tomorrow, maybe they have something.

OK, I have the dimensions.
What I want to fit onto the shelf:
2 12 power sockets
2 illuminated power switches for the sockets
1 GIPRO speed indicator

Socket's hole diameter 1.13 in with lip 1.44 in
Switch's square hole 0.98 x 0.44 positioned vertically
GIPRO - I don't kow the dimensions 0 haven't bought yet.

Position on the shelf: both sockets on both sides of the shelf simmetrically. The switches for them beside them, for example: position switch on the right hand side of the left socket, and mirroe to the right side of the shelf. And, I was wondering if GIPRO indicator square hole will fir in the middle between.

Please let me know if it's possible.

Let's communicate via email or PM so as not to clutter up the thread.  It's also easier to send drawings, mock-ups, etc. that way.

NOTICE Neutral

Powerlet has changed their cigarette ligheter style outlet to the standard 1.125" configuration.

When ordering shelves please specify the hole size you need in inches.

Rick,
I would be interested in a shelf with the following items pre-drilled/machined:
1) 2 @ powerlets
2) 1 @ 2pin sae connector.

The sae 2pin connector has the following dimensions:  hole size= 21mm and the overall size is 50mm round with a center to center mounting hole dim of 27mm.  I will drill the the mounting holes for the sae connector, i include this dim to give you a better understanding of the overall size of the connector.  Use the link below and scroll down to the RV roof connector, that is the one i have.  If you have questions about the sae connector dims please ask.

My preference for layout would be the sae in the middle and a powerlet on each side (like your pics in this thread)  My hope is the sae connector will be of similar size to the datel device and everything will fit.  Also, i would not be opposed to the overall shelf size being increased to fit everything.

You can email me using my contact info in my profile or respond back here.  I don't get online everyday so don't be alarmed if i don't respond for a couple days.

Thanks.

I have one of those SAE outlets myself.  I installed it in my tankbag.  I run power from a powerlet on the shelf to another powerlet on the tankbag.  The tankbag contains an electrical distribution and control systems.   I have several kinds of outlets and heatrollers built into the side of the tankbag.  Here's a link  http://www.vstrom.info/Smf/index.php/topic,2351.0.html

The 50 mm diameter is two great for the center of my larger 2.5" shelf.  It may be possible to mount the unit in the center and then cut the 50 mm diamter flush with the shelf.  That would mean trimming a straight line across the top and an arc at the bottom.  There is still room for the bolts.  It could look nice if the shelf where black also.

Personally though, I would find a slimmer outlet or a different location ... maybe a tankbag.

A customer asked me to make a hole for this switch on his plate.  I thought it was worth sharing.

A waterproof rocker switch for $4.50.  It uses a 0.795" Hole

Rick is the man.  We had a little mis-communication on hole sizes for the meter and he ended up making me a 2nd shelf with the correct size for no extra charge.  Very impressed with his service!
