Sprocki's 17 inch conversion:

PARTS FROM THE SV 1000 NEEDED:

- Rims (3,5 x 17 and 5,5 x 17)
- Rear caliper anchor plate
- Rear brake disk

Remark: I also used the SV sprocket carrier, since I got it with the rims and the mounting holes are identical

FRONT:

The DL front brake disks are a match and don't need changes. The front axle must be turned down, because it functions as a spacer as well. As an extra I got a bushing fabricated, which has exactly the size of the front axles turned down portion. This way I am able reversing the 17 inch conversion at any time.

Because the axle hole of the SV rim has a bigger size, a custom bushing for bridging the size difference must be fabricated .

REAR:

Basically the same, a bushing must be custom made. The brake anchor plate must be somewhat grind down so it fits in between the wheel and the swing arm with no problem. One more bushing must be fabricated for using with the anchor plate.

General Notes:

To be on the safe side, I got all bushings fabricated slightly shorter than the measurements showed they should be. This way nothing bad can happen, e.g. should a bolt get tightened over specs, or similar. Basically all parts where custom fabricated on the go, while we worked. We fabricated the part, mounted it, measured, and did the corrections machining it to the proper size.

Great looking bike!!!

I've decided to put SV1000 rear wheel on SV-Strom, and actually, I've bought one. This information is great for me!!!

And the next thing, I'll install the GSX-R1000 fork (extended) that will look like on the famous Strom we have already talked about:

Thanks for the info. It would be even more helpful to have the dimensions of the axle and bushings you had fabricated. Drawings are always good for this kind of stuff because pictures speak volumes Smiley

I should have the rear covered then, if I decide to go that way. Just have to cut some spacers, may just do it for grins.  Grin I have the wheel, spacers, hub, axle & caliper mount.

Have a couple questions about the front.

1. What bike is that fender from?

2. You didn't find cutting approx. 6.5mm off the axle didn't cut down too much on the available axle material to allow proper torquing of the axle? Here's a rough drawing of the spacer end of the axle. The red portion is what has to be chopped off & the yellow is where most of the torque will be applied. I believe this is close to scale.

Instead of the axle bearing spacers, 6304-2RS bearing could be used. Proper outside diameter and width for SV wheel & inside diameter for DL axle. Photo with bearing and seals on uncut DL axle.

Possible alternate seal. I havn't checked this out: Kawasaki Part # 92049-1061, oil seal, 28mm x 52mm x 5mm. It is a current part number. Price about the same as the 28x52x7 ones I ordered.

ib, wheres that Strom with the GSX-R1000 fork located? Is the fork really extended? Looks like normal GSX-R travel. I was told it couldn't be done where it would be satisfactory because of the type of internals used.

John, this Strom is from a friend of mine. In August I'll be in his garage. Promise to bring back full documentation, tons of photos, etc... The bike is in city Umag on Istria peninsula in Croatia.

I'll go this way. Look gorgeous, and all the riders that were riding the bike were astonished how it performs (125-130 HP) and rock solid at high speeds (up to 250 km/h).

Another DL650 with 17" front from south of Croatia:

Nice,

Does this mean that the 4 piston calipers of the SV1000 are a simple bolt on option for the DL's?    Grin

No, the bolt holes are wider & the pad-to-rotor position is offset from the DL. RichlandRick is going to try and make some spacers if I ever get around to making some very precise measurements.  Shocked

After a few days thinking about front wheel conversion, I came up with the fact that the 19" front wheel looks the best on our bikes. The best looking 17" front wheel is on the Croatian bike using GSX-R forks (owner's friend on the bike):

While looking great, I see problems. Bike is very low, ground clearance is miserable. Foot pegs are  completely scraped. Fork travel and comfort of the whole setup is probably  miserable compared to well tuned standard forks and 19" wheel. Everything is OK while the road is good, but changes dramatically when it gets bumpy.

I believe many would agree that 17" front is not the best looking on our long front forks - there is a gap between fender and fairing and it's just too big to look nice. Can't get used to it.

I'll try to get as much data for GSX-R forks as possible next month.

Did this thread end or get moved to another title? I like the idea of the upgraded forks, front wheel, front fender, and SV engine fairing.
