I would say no. Of course there is a mechanical or electrical problem from time-to-time. But I would say these are relatively few with the number of Strom's on the road.

Normal Strom maintenance involves oil & filter changes, air filter, spark plugs, tires, chain & sprocket set, fluid checks & changes, valve check & adjustment (if needed), and checking anything that should be checked on any bike during it's life. A few FI & operator control adjustments early in their life is benificial.

Check the New owners checklist for things that may be a little out of the ordinary.

Quite a few Strom's, 1000 & 650, are over the 100,000 mile (161,000 km) mark with very few problems. If I remember correctly, the first equipment failure for Louis (below) was a tail light bulb at 99K miles.

Continue further down page for Kith Burkingstock's write-ups for 100K, 120K & 150K miles maintenance.

The following is one of the most complete maintenance histories (first 90,000 Km / 56,000 miles) by Louis Bourgeois' on his 2002 DL1000.

Hello all, on March 9, 2008 my K3 DL1000 went over the 100,000 mile mark. The bike was bought new as a "left over" on Feb 7, 2004 for $7300. It came with 1 mile on the odometer. Here is the maintenance rundown from my records.

27 oil changes - Castrol Syntec 10x40 (full synthetic)
14 oil filter changes - Fram PH6018
6   front brake pad changes. EBCHH. you must be able to stop !!
2   rear brake pad changes. stock suzuki pads. I dont use the rear brakes much.
5   chains
1   sprocket set at 61,120 miles
5   front tires
8   rear tires
3   valve clearance checks. no adjustments have been made. all within spec.
3   spark plug changes
3   coolant drain & refill
0   leaks !!!

There has only been TWO part failures in all of these miles!! The rear exhaust/header gasket at 66,217 miles and the front brake stop switch at 100,000 miles. These two items total replacement is under $20. And I still have 11 months left on my extended warranty !!

mileage by the year-2004-18000, 2005-22901, 2006-23715, 2007-28536, 2008-6848.

Tires-I prefer the 'old' Tourance. here is the mileage from all the tires I've tried.
original Bridgestone F & R-9907mi. these were the worst.
Dunlop rear 9691mi. next worst tire.
Pirelli Scorpion fronts 21899 & 18985mi, Pirelli scorp rear 9216mi. good tires.
Tourances fronts 16147, 18018. Front EXP at +14000.
Tourances rear 12,992, 14775, 14601, 13744. Front EXP 8948.

The Strom is a great bike and runs strong. I've probably sold 30 of them for Suzuki from my testamonial. Here is a list of the 'things' not stock on my bike...Piaa fogs, IPF spots, Gerbing heated jacket/gloves, cig lighter for accessories, Garmin 2720 with RAM mount, Emgo mirrors, rear stand spools, outside temp gauge, dash shelf, modified handguards, Galfer stell front lines, fender extender, Russell seat, K&N air filter, race tech .90 springs w/178 mm spacers, Kappa hard bags, Marsee tank bag, Saeng windscreen deflecter, Cee Bailey 26in over stock shield, handle bar crossbar w/pad, $9 throttle lock, throttle wrist rest, coin holder, blue sea fuse box, 1in bar riser/pullback, Givi crashguards, Suzuki centerstand and Oury grips.

My original thought in 2004 was to buy a BMW GS1150. I'm glad I got the Strom and it has cost a lot less than operating and owning the BMW !

BTW, the Stom bike has probably less than 100 miles on it from off roading.

To obtain a high mileage, all you have to do is just ride your bike everyday. Granted living in sunny GA, we have a year round riding season. But 100K isnt very many miles for a motorcycle. My 1991 H-D FXRS-CONV has 343,000 miles on its odometer, that is one maintenance 'breakdown' you wouldn't want to see. There's not enough internet space for me to type it all out, but I love the bike just the same.

I have a pic of the Stom odometer, so if anybody wants to help me out and post it for me, that would be nice.

Cheers and happy riding,

5 months and 1 week later it's time for the 120,000 mile review. During this time we finally had a part failure, well two if you want to count the stock battery dying. Yep at 38 miles past the big round 100K mileage number the front brake switch went out...

The stock battery that came with the K3 finally died @ 110,529 miles

Imagine that, in 120,000 miles only (so far) one broke part/failure for a total of $4.00.

Other maintenance performed from 100K to 120K:
6 oil changes/3 filter changes - Castrol 10X40 syntec/Fram filters
plug change @100,584
sprockets/chain @ 102,201
replaced front wheel bearings @ 105,519. One looked good, one needed replacement
rear brake pads EBC @ 110,356
front brake pads EBCHH @ 111,342

Two sets of tire changes during this time. It's now riding on Michelin Anakee front and a Dunlop D607 rear. I prefer the Tourances (not the EXP version) but I decieded to mix it up a bit.

5,900 miles of this came from a two week trip through 11 western states CO,MT,WY,ID,CA,WA,OR,AZ,UT,NV,NM and 2 Canadian providences BC and Alberta. Some high spots- covered Glacier NP, Icefields Pkwy, Lolo road, Mt Rainer, Mt St Helens, Crater lake, Redwood forrest, NV Hwy 50, Bryce NP. Temps ranged from 33 to 103F with a snowstorm on the Icefields Pkwy!! Only rode about 100 miles on the Interstate and did about 100 miles of unpaved roads on the trip.

Now it is time for my 150,000 mile writeup (Sept 2009). Once again there have been NO mechnicals and NO parts had to be purchased except those that I consider as 'routine maintenance'.

In the last 30,000 miles: (since the last writeup)

-a new chain at 124,436 mi.
-EBCHH front brake pads at 130,067mi (lasted 18725 mi)
-adjusted vales at 133,021 miles. 5 were a little tight. previous adjustment was at 66,804 mi. (all were within spec)
-replaced rear wheel/sprocket bearings at 135,736.  first replacement.
-EBCHH front brake pads at 143,668 mi
-replaced fuel filter at 143,408 miles. first replacement. At this time I purchased a new fuel pump that I will use on my extended range tank. The original pump is still good.
-replaced battery at 147,336 miles. second replacement
-replaced chain/sprockets at 150,001 mi. previous chain lasted 25,000 mi and previous sprockets lasted 48,000 miles
-8 oil changes and 4 oil filter changes.  all Castrol 10x40 syntech w/ Fram filters

tires: I prefer Tourances but I have used other tires. There were three rear changes and 2 fronts in the last 30,000 mi.
overall total average rear miles is 12,000 miles. average front mileage is 18,000 mi

Maybe its just luck but in 150,000 miles I've only has to spend a total of $20 for these three items: front brake light switch, exhaust gasket and clutch slave seal. Those might also be considered as wear items!!!

So get on that Strom and ride!!
