Had an interesting experience at my local Suzuki dealer last weekend. I dropped off my new 2012 DL650 Adventure for it's 600 mi. throttle body sync check, and they noticed I had put on a K&N filter with my 600 mi. oil change. They gave me all kinds of crap about it, saying anything other than the OEM filter could ruin the engine and void the warranty. They then proceeded to recant various horror stories regarding owners who used aftermarket oil filters, such a rod knock due to low oil pressure, blown head gaskets due to high oil pressure, blown motors, yada, yada, yada.
My response was "You show me empirical proof that the K&N filter adversely effects oil flow or filtration and I'll happily switch to the Suzuki filter". Anything less is bias, conjecture and presupposition (throw in a little internet hysteria while you're at it). I also casually mentioned that I had used K&N oil filters on my 2003 DL1000 (92,000 miles) and my 2007 DL650 (95,000 miles) with nary a problem. And to throw in a little irony, it was another Suzuki dealer that originally recommended and sold me the K&N filter for my first V-Strom!
Anyone have similar experiences with their dealer?

K&N is crap, basically. Your dealer was right.

Crap? Based on what knowledge or proof? For that matter, how do we know it's not superior to the OEM filter?

That is an air filter. This is just as bad as an oil thread but I've never had a problem in nearly 40,000 miles on K&N oil filters.

I have run them for 55,000 miles on the BMW. I like the "nut" built into the bottom, helps on the Beemer to get them off. I have never seen a bad report on the K&N oil filter and don't expect to.

The K&N oil filter is a Wix with a nut on the end. JohnofChar gave it a recommended rating when examining available filters.

What we need here are facts and not a bunch of speculation and opinions. The closest thing I've seen of an actual comparison or study is here: http://www.calsci.com/motorcycleinfo/FilterStudy.html. Granted, it may not be scientific, but the guy bought 14 new filters, dissassembled them and rated the quality of materials and construction. His conclusion: They are all crap (including the Suzuki OEM filter). All I am interested in is that the flow and filtration specs are equal to or greater than the OEM filter. Until that can be proven, the debate is moot.

What kind of experience? Did you have one fail on you?

Wera688 has over a quarter of a million miles on a DL1000 using Fram oil filters. Fram didn't make John's recommended list. I have the Bales adapter to use the CalSci recommended Purolator PL14610 filter but really am not concerned about oil filter choice causing early engine death.

Everyone has likes and dislikes. A friend of mine would not use a fram filter for anything. I have been using fram on everything I own with zero problems. When asked why he disliked fram his responce was, were they were made. I would use a k&n but not willing to pay extra for a nut.
