Ride every day except ice/snow.  East TN has several days in teens, quite a few days in 20s and 30s. Wear a Widder vest/arm chaps and insulated pants, boots, and gloves.  Always very comfortable except for toes.  Not super cold, but not comfortable.  Finally got around to making first prototype of heated insole.
Design specs:
2 ½ feet of 0.01” nylon covered SS bead wire (~37 ohms, readily available at craft/hobby store) adhered (serpentined) to bottom of boot insole with electrical bundling tape (not duct tape).  Covered only area from ball of foot to toes.  Supply wire (26 gauge telephone wire/handy and small) connected via white plastic, two conductor connector from RS to common cig plug for current.
Performance:
Works perfectly.  Draws .38 amp = 5.3 watts @ 14 V.  IR thermometer shows ~100 degrees at insole upper surface. Toes stay “not too warm, not too cool, just right”.  Lot of design and work remains for power supply lines.
Cost:
Wire = ~$1.98/100’
Connector = $1.99
Elec. Bundling tape = <$.05
Cig. Plug = Huh? (had it around)

Respectfully,
Bill T.

To the really cold weather riders,
Finally tried my DIY heated inner soles and they couldn’t work better.  Always made it fine without, but on the really cold days (only 27 this am) my toes would be a little cold.  Mixed 2 1/2 feet nylon coated stainless steel wire (Hobby Lobby) taped to bottom of boot inner soles + short two-conductor cables up and over boot tops with small coax connectors + “Y” harness down inside of pant legs with matching coax connectors at feet and at waist + power wire to cig adapter in faring.  Produces 5-6 watts @ 14 volts.  Could not work better.

Cheers,
Bill T.

Impressive bit of work... Thumbs Up

If that was me with my DIY skills, it would have been a Mastercard moment:

Wire = ~$1.98/100’
Connector = $1.99
Elec. Bundling tape = <$.05

Sight of rider being electrocuted at 80mph : priceless!!  Grin  Shocked
